Dear Friends and Colleagues, The lack of an Internet connection since I left Kinshasa on July 11 has been a major obstacle to keeping you informed as often as I had hoped. I am now at Kasongo as I prepare this report, connected to the Internet wirelessly using my laptop thanks to the kindness of the local office of CARE International in the DRC (click on link below to view photographs). To the extent that this Internet access remains available, I plan to limit this report to the highlights of my trip from Kinshasa to Kasongo, and to provide a summary of our current Mectizan distribution efforts in the next report. In brief, We have just completed distributing Mectizan in the health zones of Kunda and Kasongo, including supervision and monitoring for severe adverse reactions, and are planning to do the training of the medical staff and the community distributors in the health zones of Samba and Lusangi starting this weekend (Map available for download in pdf format). The distribution in these zones will take place during a two-week window of the dry season in November.
